Compass

The compass has been part of life at sea for as long as humans have ventured away from the shore. While the traditional magnetic compass still has a place on the bridge, most of today’s advanced navigation systems require digital compass inputs. These compasses, often called heading sensors, fill the same role, but they communicate in electrons instead of visually.
Everyone is familiar with the electronic compass that guides the autopilot. What else can an electronic compass do? Many of today’s networked systems allow the user to view radar overlay on the chartplotter screen. The heading sensor’s job is to provide an accurate heading in order to synchronize the actual radar targets with the chart.
